Dear Future Self

By TowTellLee (2025)
Performed by Kasane Teto (UTAU)

Hey there, future me
Remember all the things that we wanted to be?
The dreams that we had back then
Will you attain?

Will you handle it?
The choice you need to make in this endless pit
I hope that you're happy
Wherever you'll be

I hope you'd get a job with tons of money 1
I hope you would be loved by everybody
I hope you're having fun, one that never ever ends
Exciting to see the future for me

Here's my letter to you
I'm hoping this will go through
Beyond this empty plateau

Here's a spell that I cast
A small request from the past
A vision ever to last

I can't wait to get older
I hope it will be better
I ask for more of you
The best you can do

For I believe in you

Oh, it's you
Yes, I remember all the things you do
They're nothing but childish thoughts
Nonsense you spew

One day, you will quit
Your hopes of holding on, slipping bit by bit
I yearn on what could have been
I wanted to win

I wish I was allowed to blend with the crowd
I wish I'm one to love, one to be proud of
I wish I'm having fun, yet my fall had just begun
I wanna go back to find what I lack

Here's that letter from you
It never even went though
Beyond this empty plateau

For this curse that you cast
A major favor you asked
I'm never up for the task

I wish that I were younger
I wish that I was better
So I'd do more for you
The best I can do

The best for you

Why? Why were you lying there?
Pretending like you never cared?
Make it work, you will bleed
For our wants, for out needs
Which we promised to let grow

Even if you dreamed too late
Don't worry, I can sit and wait
Though a decade may pass
And the world burns to ash
Know that I'll watch over you

If you could let me be what I can be
Promise that you will do the same

Commentary & Reccommendations

If you'll permit me a bit of dramatization, this kind of song is why I love music. This has an amateurish quality to it where it sounds like it was just made by someone by themselves in their bedroom, and using UTAU, a virtual singer program that as you can hear, is really hard to manipulate in a way that sounds understandable in english, kind of adds to it for me? That rub, that difficulty and effort required to understand the song, makes it feel more like a human made it.

Not a lot of songs really dig into this precise feeling, both the kind of when you're young you feel like your future self can do anything and is living their best life, and the kind of when you're older feeling that you're letting your past self down, and that looking back your young self was unaware of all the problems you had.
It's honestly, partly, a reassuring feeling, because it's thinking about how you've come to a much better understanding about yourself since you were a kid so you can better help yourself and think about yourself, but at the same time it's bittersweet because it's like, you had this big expectation for your future self that you feel like you let yourself down with, but at the same time, you didn't know any better and you didn't know how the future would be.

And the fact that it's such a small artist writing about such a precise yet common feeling is just, it's really cool.

Reccommendations

i wanna shower feat. Adachi Rei
By thomascoolkid (2026)
Adachi Rei is another cool UTAU singer that's been getting more popular recently. Unlike other virtual singer voices that use a human voice as a base, Rei's is made by editting a sine wave, which I think is neat. This is a cute song about Rei wanting to be more human and be able to take a shower.

Another song about the childhood-adulthood connection and being kind to your inner child. Captions are available! This is one of my favorite songs, it makes me cry a lot.

On Bleed American (2001)
Another song that I think about with regard to being kinder towards your past self.
