the ending

by Bill Wurtz (2022)

Getting ready to start my day.
The weather makes me smile,
It's a beautiful day when it rains all day.

Yes, I'd like to get an education,
And go into the high life
And then climb back down, but I don't know how...
To climb back out.

I'm not worthy of the chosen road before me,
And I don't even know who I wanna be. 1

I'm not listening to the words we wrote on paper
'Cause I'm not sure if anything is true.

It's not true,
It's not true,
THAT'S NOT TRUE.
But it still sounds musical.
Put it in my musical.

And the musical music is true.
And I'm not really sure how to handle it.

Don't really know what is.
Don't really believe it.
Can't figure out what it says.

It makes me weep,
Skip,
Sing it while I sleep,
Conversate with a stranger at 10x speed, and slow it way way down for the memory.
Slow it way way way down for the ending.

[riff]

That's the trumpet.
Get up and go stare at the flag pole.

[riff]

I'm not worthy of this course of entertainment and I don't even know who I'd rather be.

I'm not listening to the words on the soundtrack 'cause I keep on getting more confused.
And I'm not sure if anything is true.

That's not true.

Commentary & Reccommendations

I strongly reccommend going through all of Bill Wurtz's videos, if you haven't already. There's of course the classics like history of japan and history of the entire world, i guess but videos like no castle really play to my sense of humor. Everything on his channel is either a neat song like this one or a silly little video.
It's hard for me to explain what it is exactly I like about Bill Wurtz. I think, like They Might Be Giants, his songs have that quality where the lyircs sound silly and nonsensical at first, but can be interpreted for a deeper meaning. Where TMBG songs vary in complexity, there's usually something funky going on in every bill wurtz song.
For this one, I'm thinking about inadequacy, mostly, but specificially inadequacy in the face of privledge. The lyrics "go into the high life... but I don't know how to climb back out" to me imply that there's some level of elevation in the "high life" that he can't free himself from, probably because of some privledge he was born into and "can't shake" from society's perspective, so to speak.
There's also "not worthy of the chosen road before me" which could be read as referring to internet popularity of being a music artist, not feeling worthy of being a "musician" because of not being sure how to phrase it or what it means or what it says, but still enjoying the music itself.

Then of course there's the matter of "don't even know who I wanna be / who I'd rather be" which is a relatable feeling. The sort of thing where one is just kind of running with what they have, with what they had planned, and doesn't know what else to do past that.
I interpret "Slow it way way down for the memory" as lingering on the memory of a conversation with someone, replaying it in one's mind, thinking about what was said and the like. There's certainly been things I've done where I just think about how they happened for years down the line, even if they're not necessarily positive or negative. Just, important.

Forgot how good this one is. Really extensive use on metaphor here. Happy Birthday to the strangers in the street!

I've had this one saved for years. This one also has off the wall lyrics but it's in the older 2D Style.
and the day goes on

This is one of the songs with more direct lyrics lol, I love it in particular because it has a really comforting feel to it, which is helped by the lyrics. The distant future of the year 1900!
